Before the visit

# What a first visit needs to answer

Bring a goal. Leave with a reasoned answer.

Fact file: September 26, 2026.

In brief

Describe the concern you want addressed, using words that feel natural to you. Keep the symptom or concern separate from the treatment name you found online.

The Federation of State Medical Boards’ advice, reviewed on September 26, 2026, still called for a proper assessment even if a patient had selected treatment from an online list.

## Put the concern into words

Make notes on the problem, the approaches you have tried so far and the change you hope to see. Bring questions you might otherwise forget.

List your medicines alongside any supplements for the discussion. If an advert prompted the visit, save its exact claim so the person treating you can address it.

## Questions for the discussion

- What condition are we assessing?

- Why is this particular medicine being considered?

- Could we consider other approaches, or choose to use no medicine?

- What would make this approach a poor fit for me?

- What will we use to judge whether this plan helps?

### Keep room for a follow-up question

The same medical-board guidance says patients themselves must be able to raise further questions.

Ask who will answer if something is unclear after the visit. Request a plain explanation of unfamiliar words before moving to the next point.

If a decision still feels rushed, ask for the written plan and time to read it. Use your own notes to compare the answers later.

Keep the answer.

Ask the same question of each service. Write down the answer and anything still unclear.
