# Ask why a test is needed

Compare the reason for a test as well as its price.

Fact file: September 26, 2026.

In brief

As of September 26, 2026, general federal prescribing law did not require a universal set of blood tests before every prescription.

That did not remove state duties, care standards or requirements attached to particular drugs.

## Start with the decision it informs

Ask what question each proposed test will help answer. Ask how a result would affect the plan and who will explain it.

If a service offers a bundle, request the names of the included tests. Compare the same set of tests when comparing fees.

Test bundles may contain very different sets of tests.

### Put the practical questions together

- Where would the sample be taken?

- Is a separate visit needed?

- Who orders the test and reads the result?

- How will I hear about a result that needs more discussion?

- Which fees are included in the quoted amount?

## Ask what happens if an exam is needed

The national medical-board group’s guidance calls on physicians to arrange necessary testing or refer the patient for it.

It also calls for an in-person referral when an assessment needs a physical examination or other hands-on procedure.

For a remote service, ask who arranges that next step. For an office, ask which parts take place there and which happen elsewhere.

## Keep a copy for the next conversation

Ask for a copy of results and an explanation in plain words. Keep the explanation with your notes about the proposed medicine.

If a result is left unexplained, make it a question for the person treating you. The comparison is about the whole process, including what happens after a test.

Keep the answer.

Ask the same question of each service. Write down the answer and anything still unclear.
